We have had our existing cell phones for about 4 years now and need an upgrade.

I have never just purchased a new phone other than when we signed up. The carrier of course offers a lot of "FREE" phones for upgrade but I would like to get something better.

Any suggestions appreciated. Where to buy etc.

I would start here, that is what we did. Search around for the best deal on the phone you want and the plan you want. I researched the different phones, looked primarily for how well they can pick up a signal (we live in a rural area) and long battery life. Did not care for a picture phone, or other bells and whistles, but they all seem to come with something. Ended up with Razors, which is a good phone except for the crappy speakerphone feature. If you are looking for a phone with a good texting feature, then someone should punch you in the ear.

I can't imagine why someone would pay for a phone.

Nextel sucks.

Some so called free phones aren't bad. I'm more then happy with my Samsung SCH-u520, size and abilities are just perfect for my use.

I'm even enjoying it more now that a work around using Bitpim has been found so I can add my own ringtones. BTW - that's something I would make sure of on my next phone especially if you want to make your own ringtones. Not every phone nor cellphone company allow this to be done. It's annoying especially when you purchase ringtones and have to give them up when you get a new phone.

We're on our 2nd Razrs. I 2nd El-Ka-Bong. Good phones except for the speaker phone function. Not a problem for me as I use my Bluetooth headset in place of the speaker phone anyways.
We're upgrading to smart phones later this year. My wife could really use one for her business. We're doing our research now.

Can't recommend any phone until you know which carrier. For instance, an AT&T RAZR is not necessarily the same as a Verizon RAZR or a Sprint RAZR.

A good site for researching the phones that individual carriers handle is phonescoop.com.

When you get to the site, click on "Carriers" on the left hand side. Once you get to the carrier page hopefully your carrier (or the one you are considering) is listed. If it is, just click on their logo.

Now you have the phones that the carrier has approved for use on their network, and these phones should be stocked at their retail stores and authorized agents.

You can filter the results by some of the key features - for instance if bluetooth is a key feature - check it and now only phones with that feature are listed. You can also filter by brands.

Once you get down to the brand and feature set you want, then you can do side by side comparisons.

These comparisons will give you user ratings, size, weight, battery life and other features.

If you find one that you think you like, click on "User Reviews" and you can see what actual customers have to say about the phone.

Over the years I've had good luck with many of the brands - but all brands have had lemons. In alphabetical order for conventional cell phones, I'd look first at LG, Motorola, Nokia or Samsung - depending on the carrier.

Smart phones are a completely different issue - one that is first dictated on which operating system you want.

Hope this helps.

How could it help??
Your entire post was basically: "I'm gonna say a lot of words that make no recommendations as you asked for, but make me sound intelligent."

Was Radio Shack busy yesterday?

I'm probably be going to buy a Smart phone later this year for work with the idea of using it to monitor my Windows servers via remote admin. Has anyone worked with these before or used remote admin on a smart phone? I'm thinking mainly of getting the Motorola 'Q' since I'm on US Cellular (unfortunately, the carrier is not negotiable).

Actually our network guys at work do this. They get notifications from the server if there's problems, updates etc... Not sure exactly how all this works, but I know it is possible.

That's good news. My main concern is the security aspect, but I'm hoping that the encryption is such that the data can be transmitted safely enough. Thanks!

Yes, we used Motorola Q phones at my last job and a combination of Servers Alive to get alerts when a service or server went down and a program called Mobile Admin to be able to remotely restart systems and services, reset passwords, unlock users, etc. Pretty slick.

I had the Razr for a few years and really liked it. I use US Cellular and renewed my contract a few weeks ago. I picked up the Blackberry Pearl 8130 and love it. Pretty much does everything you could ever want out of a smart phone.

I should add that I looked at the Moto Q as a comparison and the Pearl seemed like a better phone. The business account rep agreed for what it's worth.

Just got a Blackberry 8830 World Edition a couple of days ago. Already the best phone i've ever had. Super easy to use. A million cool features. Great for e-mail, texts, the web. My wife has the Treo 700wx. Almost got one. It's a great phone as well, but actually like my Blackberry better. Only downside....no camera. I can download music, pics, and video onto it though.

Blackberry 8830:

I realize that this is probably a stupid question, but do they charge you extra each month when you have a blackberry or similar as opposed to a regular cell phone?

Yeah, we pay for a data package. Unlimited internet, texting etc, etc. With 2 regular phones and 2 smart phones our cell bill goes from $135 to $210/month.

Who loves ya? For what it's worth, the extra money spent on the data plans for the Blackberry is well worth it. Very cool product.
