My wife owns a Canon S2IS, and she recently bought a new SD card (8 GB) so she would have more memory for the videos she likes to shoot.

It came in yesterday, and when she put it in the camera, she got a "Memory Card Error" message. She has two other SD cards for the camera (MUCH smaller capacity) but has never had this problem. My 20D uses a compact flash card, and I've never had this message pop up, either.

I don't have any other equipment that uses an SD card, so I can't test it to see if it's the card that's the problem.

Does anyone use any of the "S*IS" Canons, and does anyone know of a problem with high-capacity cards for these models?

MANY thanks!

I had a similar problem with a Toshiba digital camera. The largest capacity SD card I used was 512MB, no problem. While on vacation I purchased a 4G SD card. When I put it in the camera, I received the same error message. I returned the card to Walgreens and they were good enough to let me try another 4G card. Same problem. Later, I was disappointed to discover the camera only had a maximum 512MB SD card capacity, thus the error message. I found that info buried in the instruction manual text, not in the specs for the camera. Try formatting the card, if you get the same message after formatting, try another card. If you get the same error message after formatting, your camera may need servicing. However, check the card handling capacity of the camera with Canon, first. It may be the camera cannot handle HC cards. Good Luck!

Thanks, pacfan...

I checked with Canon. The maximum size card the S2 can use is a 4 gig. Oops.

Keep an eye on if they might have a firmware update that'll increase the capacity.
