On my computer I have these 2 options. I would prefer to use the 1394, because it says it runs at 400 Mbps vs 100 Mbps for the LAN.
For some reason, I can only seem to use the LAN. I use a local cable company for Internet access. When I click on 1394, my Internet goes dead. I dont know what 1394 is. |

1394 is called firewire, it's a dieing connection usually used for connecting external devices such as burners or hard drives where is LAN is used to make computers communicate with one another or to connect to a broadband modem.
Firewire was fast until USB 2 came out. |

Firewire is actually faster than USB 2.0 in real world application. USB 2.0 has a 480MB spec and Firewire is 400MB but Firewire is typically 30% faster on average because of differences in architecture. Firewire uses a more efficient peer to peer transfer. USB2.0 uses a master-slave transfer. Firewire transfers are controlled by the Firewire devices, USB 2.0 transfers are controlled by the PC which is usually busy doing other things.
Despite that, USB 2.0 is more widely used because it's a cheaper technology. The hardware itself is cheaper and there is no licensing fee like there is with Firewire. It's like comparing SATA to SCSI. SATA has a higher maximum speed but SCSI is usually faster. |

Firewire2 is 800 MB speed. The other advantage is can charge a device as well. It's Apple's technology so they integrate it into their computers. You can network with Firewire between computers and other devices. |

You can charge devices over USB as well. I know I do that with my phone and my IPOD Mini. Firewire does have a higher power output so I'd guess it would charge devices faster than USB.
You can also network PC's and other devices using USB. Apple really shot themselves in the foot with the licensing fee for Firewire. If they hadn't done that, you would see it much more than you do today. IIRC, that was something Jobs pushed for despite protests from other execs in the company. The funny thing is that all new IPODS are strictly USB interface to save money on production. They have eliminated their own technology from their most popular accessory. Nice move. |
