A friend of mine just got a new computer for his office. There's only 3 computers including his. They are all running XP Pro. The internet access is from another computer on the network. I set up his computer and ran the network wizard, but it is not seeing the other computers and can't access the internet. What am I doing wrong?

He doesn't care about access to the other computers, just to the internet.

First, what kind of switch/router setup are you using? Second, you need to make sure that all the computers are setup running dynamic DHCP. It's usually set to default if you have TCP/IP client installed.

Give some details of equipment and setup.

It's hooked up to a Giga Fast Ethernet EZ 500 S. I'm assuming (I know, dangerous) that the other computers don't need to be messed with because they were/are all working fine. I am just swapping out 1 comp that is using the network and it's not the gateway.

How do it make sure it's set up to run dynamic DHCP?

If I'm reading this right, there were two PC's on the network. One was sharing the internet connection (ICS??) and the other was connecting to the internet successfully via the shared connection and then you added a 3rd PC?

If you bring up the properties of the network connection on the 3rd PC and click on the support tab, what do you get for an IP address?

There were 3 PCs on the network.
All three were able to acces the internet.
One was on it's last legs, so he bought a replacement.
What I did was swap the two.
The other two are still able to acces the internet.
When I swap the original computer back with it's replacement, it can still access the internet.
I cannot get the new one to access the internet.

OK, then answer my last question when you can get to that computer.

Also do the same thing on the other PC that is on the network and can access the Internet through the shared connection.

I'm an idot. It had a Comp. Assoc. Firewall on it and I didn't realize that. It poped up no warnings, etc. Got it fixed today with no other problems.

Now, they do seem to have a networking issue. The printer is hooked up to the front computer (A). Two other computers(B & C) share it. Recently those two (B & C)computers get an error message "Error initializing outputdevice" when they try to print. I found out that this has happened before, but no one knows why or what was done to fix it. The comp that is hooked up to the printer (A)can access documents on the other 2 (B&C). The other two (B&C)can see folders on that one (A), but can not open any although they are set up to share.
Ineternet hooks into LinkSys router.
Comps A & B hook directly into same router.
Comp C hooks into same router via a switch.

Thoughts? What other info do you need? Does this sound like a network problem or could it be a driver problem? The sharing folders isn't a big deal to them but the printer is.
Is it worth trying to set the network up from scratch or not?

How do I determine the printers IP address so that I can try to ping it?

Nobody has any issues accessing the internet, though I cleaned a crapload of spyware/adware off one of the machines today. That machine also does not have active virus protection, which I will fix tomorrow.

The accessing files issue deals with permission settings and the printer issue may be the same as well. Grab a basic networking book and that'll help you learn how to setup simple profiles for sharing in the office.

The thing with the printers, were they working before in this configuration?

The priners were working fine. Supposedly nothing changed, which I kinda believe, though something must have changed. From the quick research I've done so far it sounds like it could be a driver issue, though beats me as to why it would pop up on occasion.

Reinstall the driver definitely never hurts, making sure you key in on the computer hooked up to the printer. You might want to look into a cheap printer server as well. I'll do a little research.

I'm definitely not a network guru (yet) so get some other answers. Make sure you're googling the error messages you get as you'll find alot of information that way as well.

If the printer is being shared from a PC, it doesn't have it's own IP address. What I would do is download the latest driver for the printer on the machine that is sharing out the printer. The other machines automatically pull the driver down from that PC.

A dedicated print server (HP Jet Direct or comparable device) is another good option but will cost a little $$$. Then you can print directly to the printer (via IP address) rather than relying on a PC as a print server.

I got it fixed today. Somone trying to be helpful removed some of the passwords form the system sot they didn't keep popping up to have to log in all the time. I fixed that and it's all better.

What book would you recommend for a decent overview of XP Networking or is there such a thing?
