Since our income is taking a hit with my hubby "retiring" and me with a temp job, we're going back to just one phone line. We have also cut down on the extra "services" associated with the phone (just keeping phone number ID, nothing else).

Question: is there anything that will kick the computer off when a phone call comes in? I looked into Callwave, etc., but we're not going to spend another $6/month on the call forwarding or call waiting needed to run these programs, plus the monthly Callwave fee. We don't get very many incoming calls, so not worth it for us to do anything fancy.

If there isn't anything that will kick the computer off line, we'll just have to remember to turn on the cell phone and have the people with whom we're close to call that if they get a busy signal.

Thanks ~ QO

There should be an option under your modem properties to disable call waiting when you're online. *I THINK*

been awhile since I used a 56k modem.

Get DSL. Then you can stay online and get phone calls. Most areas you can get DSL cheaper than dialup.

*70 in front of the phone number you dial to connect to the ISP should disable call waiting.

I believe she said she only has caller ID. I've been searching around to see if there might something that will do what she wants, but no luck so far.

I am pretty sure Call Waiting is required.

It is like asking to have another phone call kick you off while you are currently talking to someone else.

We don't have call waiting (it's a $6 option we don't really need, as we don't get many calls.) We can't get DSL because it's not offered in our area. Yep, we're screwed. Roll Eyes

Would someone interpret this for me please? Do I, or do I not, require call-waiting???

quote:

3) REQUIREMENTS FOR CALLWAVE SERVICES

Nope, I think you only need Call Forwarding.

This link should be of interest.

Cripes, I'm having one of those days.
I meant Call-forwarding and not call-waiting.
Whatever.
I think we're going with telling people we know to call the cell phone if the land line is busy.

But, I don't think they get a busy signal, I think it just bumps you (computer) offline

Hauser, the older modems used to do that, but we tried calling the computer line when the computer was hooked up, and all we get is a busy signal. I dropped VM because they had doubled the price since I first subscribed. It used to be $5 a month and now it's almost $10. I just bought a digital answering machine for $15. (We have a tendency to fry the things during storms in the summer, even with a surge protector.)

No big deal, really. I'll start working next week, which will drastically cut my compter time anyway. And the hubby won't have any money to be spending his time on eBay. Wink
